Aarikka Oy’s CEO resigns

Anu Vauhkonen

Anu Vauhkonen, CEO of the Finnish design company Aarikka Oy, will leave her post by the end of February 2018.

Anu Vauhkonen, CEO of Aarikka Oy since 2016, has announced her resignation from the company. She is leaving her post at her own request.

In recent years, Aarikka has had a focused strategy to clarify its brand, increase its turnover, improve its profitability and digitalise the company’s processes. The company’s economy now stands on solid ground. This year, the turnover will increase by around 25% from last year, and the company’s result will be clearly positive.

“Aarikka is a unique and fine company. I am grateful to have been part of building this iconic Finnish brand. I feel that I have accomplished the change I came to make at Aarikka. The change in the company’s direction has been major to the entire personnel, whom I’d like to thank for taking Aarikka onto a new track together. Now is the right time to leave the strategic development of the company into an even stronger business to the new owners,” says Anu Vauhkonen.

Aarikka Oy’s capital stock was sold in April 2017 to Martinex Oy, a Finnish family-owned company producing gift and household items, toys, games and textiles.

“As the chair of the board, I thank Anu Vauhkonen for her work as the CEO of Aarikka and wish her all the best in the future,” says Martinex Oy’s CEO, Riia Sandström.

Founded in 1954, Aarikka Oy is a design company that manufactures home and jewellery products. The company’s turnover is two million euros and it has a dozen direct employees. Aarikka is the subsidiary of Martinex Oy. Aarikka products are handmade, either by home-based employees or at centres promoting social inclusion and employment. The products carry the Key Flag symbol and the Design from Finland symbol, granted by the Association for Finnish Work to products made in Finland.

Aarikka and the Moomins cooperate: Bring joy to life with Moomin jewellery!

Moomin by Aarikka Little My earrings

Finnish producer of characterful wooden jewellery and home accessories Aarikka Oy will begin a partnership with Moomin Characters within the Nordic countries and selected Asian countries. Aarikka’s Moomin jewellery range will hit the market in spring 2018.

Aarikka’s roots are in Finnish forests and nature, from which the company draws ideas and raw materials for its products. Similarly, Aarikka’s Moomin jewellery range features the kind of illustration work by Tove Jansson which either shows the Moomin characters adventuring in Moominvalley or shows Moominvalley over the four seasons. The Aarikka jewellery product ranges are named on the basis of these themes. The Moomin collection will also include home accessories like key rings and towel clips.

According to Aarikka’s chief designer Pauliina Aarikka, the brand’s design is known for its crisp Scandinavian lines and round shapes. The brand promise, Drops of Joy, communicates the way in which Aarikka products bring people a sprinkling of happiness. We will now have more of these drops of joy in the Aarikka jewellery range, with Little My, Snorkmaiden, Moomintroll and the other Moomin characters joining it.

As with all Aarikka’s jewellery, products in the Moomin jewellery range are made from natural materials. Aarikka’s wooden beads are made from Nordic tree types such as birch and maple. Only high-quality jewellery parts are selected, and no traces of turning are visible in our wooden beads. All wooden parts are coloured at Aarikka’s factory in Vallila, Helsinki, and the jewellery items are assembled by hand by home-based employees in Finland.

Aarikka’s Moomin jewellery range and key rings will hit the market in spring 2018, when they will be exhibited to customers at the international trade fairs Ambiente and Maison&Objet. The company believes that the new ‘Moomin by Aarikka’ products will give it a tremendous boost, especially in the Asian markets.

Aarikka introduces Unisex jewellery to its autumn and winter range

Aarikka’s autumn and winter 2017–2018 jewellery range has been inspired by the tranquility of the forest. As autumn approaches winter, the evenings draw in and it’s time to settle. The quiet forest is dressed in nature’s most beautiful colour palette. The pure, light wood brings just the right amount of freshness to the range.

The most interesting new arrival this autumn is Aarikka’s Unisex range. The jewellery in the range is designed to suit everyone. The design is subdued and beautiful. The clean, simple lines and high-quality materials come together to create a unique whole. Once again, natural materials take centre stage while the leather brings an edge to the range.

The Peto necklace is one of the stars of the range. The combination of light wood and metal give the piece a fresh look. Due to its subdued colours, the necklace can be worn with almost any outfit. The Peto necklace is available in two different lengths. Designed by Sini Hjelt.

The Aikapuu watches add the finishing touches to the Unisex range. The dial is made from precious natural materials, such as ebony.  The range also includes watch straps in earthy tones. Designed by Marianne Siponmaa.

Responsible business, eco-friendliness and sustainability are of the utmost importance to Aarikka. We use only the best wood as the main material in our products, and all our products are assembled by hand in Finland. Aarikka has a number of subcontractors and employees who work from home, and the company offers assembly and packaging work to workshops that promote social inclusion and employment. Martinex Oy buys revamped Aarikka Oy

Raisio-based family business Martinex Oy has purchased the entire capital stock of Aarikka Oy from the company’s current owners, the daughters of founder Kaija Aarikka. Aarikka Oy will continue its operations as a subsidiary of Martinex Oy.

Martinex Oy, a producer of gift products, household goods, toys, games and textiles, will create a home for the renewed Aarikka brand in a financially stable and international family business. The acquisition will support Aarikka Oy’s internationalisation efforts and strengthen Martinex Oy’s brand selection.

“Finnish work and Finnishness are at the heart of Martinex. Aarikka is a fantastic Finnish brand with strong, old roots. The company and its products are a great match with Martinex Oy, which has also previously grown through acquisition”, Martinex Oy CEO and Partner Riia Sandström says.

Pauliina Aarikka, who is continuing as a product designer at Aarikka, is very satisfied with the new owner: “We found a good successor for Aarikka, one who is able to put a strong emphasis on the company’s development.”

Of Aarikka Oy’s two million euro turnover, half comes from its home and gift products, and the other half from jewellery made from natural materials. Martinex Oy began its operations as a producer of gift products and household goods, which are still an essential part of the company alongside textiles, games and toys. The company’s turnover in 2016 was approximately 12 million euros.

“Aarikka has done a lot of work over the past year to clarify its brand and internationalise its operations in order to increase the company’s turnover. Exports grew last year from less than five per cent to nearly fifteen per cent of the company’s turnover. This acquisition brings with it many new opportunities and a boost to Aarikka’s internationalisation efforts and increasing turnover”, says Anu Vauhkonen, CEO of Aarikka Oy.

The parties have agreed not to publish the purchase price.

Aarikka’s new pastel jewellery collection

Our spring range is inspired by fields and meadows. Nature is a source of strength and pleasure, which is communicated in the feminine design and natural materials used in our spring jewellery. The colour palette is a cocktail of light tones, providing colour therapy in shades borrowed from water and the sun.

Our collection of rings is new to the spring range. The range includes four eye‐catching yet simple designs. The jewellery range is naturally stylish, adding a finishing touch to the wearer’s outfit.

Responsible business, eco‐friendliness and sustainability are of the utmost importance to Aarikka. We use only the best wood as the main material in our products, and all our products are assembled by hand in Finland. Aarikka’s new spring décor arrivals!

Aarikka’s new spring/summer 2017 collection takes inspiration from nature: the lakes of Saimaa, its peninsulas, its beaches and its cliffs. The joys of spring and summer are conveyed in the collection’s playfulness, the beautiful surface of the wood, its apple-blossom tones and its gentle wind chimes.

Just as we are given a sea of apple blossom to enjoy each year as spring gives way to summer, the new colour of the collection is of the same delicate pink. The interior design perennials, white and grey, continue to feature as well.

Wood and ceramics have been combined in the Pouta wind chime as well as the Yrtti and Mini hanging flower baskets by Marianne Siponmaa. The wind chimes are a joy to look at and listen to on a summer evening.

Responsible business, eco-friendliness and sustainability are of the utmost importance to Aarikka. Christmas at Aarikka 2016

The most beautiful decoration for the Christmas dining table is the wooden Helmi pearl garland. The rhythmical ribbon of wooden beads strung onto a linen string will be the undoubted gem of the festive table. Christmas delights can be served using the Pilkku tray, with its handy upright handle, or the Pouta chopping board. The cork trivet from the same series protects your table from hot serving dishes.

Christmas branches and the traditional Christmas tree can now be adorned with Kuusenkoru decorations as well as lovely cork and ceramic decorations. The much loved red and white elves whisper Christmas greetings and fill the home with Christmas music and cheer!

New Aarikka jewellery for autumn

Aarikka’s autumn jewellery features the enchanting magic of Lapland. The natural colours evoke thoughts of bright raspberries, magical lilacs and blue lakes. The design plays with wooden rings, Aarikka’s famous wooden beads and exciting combinations of materials.

Aarikka’s autumn range will be supplemented by a new product group comprising brooches designed by Marianne Siponmaa. The stylish brooches can be used to fasten a large scarf, or to make an otherwise classic style your own.

The long, eye-catching Hilla, Malla and Saaga necklaces are a bold accessory to an autumn outfit. The Seita necklace combines leather and wood – two wonderful natural materials – for a sophisticated and stylish look. The new Saame necklace is available in four different colours, including an eye-catching red reminiscent of the Arctic bramble.

Eco-friendliness and sustainability are of the utmost importance to Aarikka. Only the best wood is used as the main material in the products, and all products are assembled by hand in Finland. All Aarikka products are flawlessly finished.

Aarikka’s new candle holders and lanterns for autumn

Aarikka’s theme for autumn is a harmonious and calming polar night. As the evenings draw in, it’s nice to spend down time at home curled up with a book. Aarikka’s tones for autumn are graphite grey – which lends itself beautifully to interior design – and deep lingonberry red. They enhance the timeless freshness of our longstanding translucent white and pure white wood.

The new Kide and Kaamos candle holder ranges bring atmosphere to autumn décor. The modern design of the Kide candle holders is Pauliina Aarikka’s handiwork. Kaamos is a candle holder range designed by Saija Malila which features soft lines as cast iron meets warm wood. The Keisarinna and Ruustinna candle holders are available in a new colour: smoke. The popular Ruustinna lantern is now also available in a smaller size, and tealight candle holders have been added to the Pouta range.
Responsible business, eco-friendliness and sustainability are of the utmost importance to Aarikka. Only the best wood is used as the main material in the products, and all products are assembled by hand in Finland. Aarikka has a number of subcontractors and employees who work from home, and in addition, the company offers assembly and packaging work to workshops promoting social inclusion and employment. Wood is – and has always been – the most important material in Aarikka’s products. The wood’s warmth and round, turned shapes are characteristic of Aarikka and tell their own story of a Scandinavian tradition.

Aarikka employs a number of subcontractors and employees who work from home in Finland. In addition, the company offers assembly and packaging work to workshops promoting social inclusion and employment. Transportation journeys can be kept short because products are assembled locally. In addition to local manufacturing, our products’ eco-friendliness is also enhanced, as we avoid the unnecessary use of packaging materials and favour eco-friendly raw materials such as wood. New Aarikka products this autumn

Lots of new products have been added to Aarikka’s range as autumn approaches. The stunning new Helmi, Pouta and Tovi mirrors reflect more light to brighten the darkening evenings. The playful Pouta notice board will help you to keep things in mind with style. The joy and style so characteristic of Aarikka come together in these new products in a unique way.

The round Pouta mirrors are made from wood and cork. The white wooden beads stand out beautifully against the cork, and the hanging wall mirrors are suitable for a range of spaces and occasions. The Pouta mirrors were designed by Marianne Siponmaa. The charming Helmi mirror is lined with white wooden beads. Designed by Pauliina Aarikka, the Helmi mirror is eye-catching and elegant. The Tovi mirror can be hung on the wall, where it can double as a jewellery holder, or placed on a table. The Tovi mirror was designed by Saija Malila.

The notice board designed by Marianne Siponmaa is great for helping you to stay on top of all your activities. The stylish notice board is an interior design element that can be adorned with cards and photographs, for example. The beautiful cork surface is punctuated by coloured wooden pins to keep easily misplaced tickets and keys safely in place.

All Aarikka products are finished with care.

Aarikka’s new lamps for autumn

Aarikka’s theme for its autumn 2016 home range is a harmonious and calming polar night. As the evenings draw in, it’s nice to spend down time at home curled up with a book. Aarikka’s new tones for autumn are graphite grey – which lends itself beautifully to interior design – and deep lingonberry red. They enhance the timeless freshness of our longstanding translucent white and pure white wood.

New for autumn, the Nuppu lamp is a timelessly stylish tabletop lamp suitable for both bedside tables and dressers. The Nuppu lamp was designed by Saija Malila.

The atmospheric Valopallo lamp is a fabulous ball lamp designed by Aamu Song and Johan Olin. It made its debut at Aarikka’s 60th anniversary exhibition and was brought into production due to popular demand. This autumn the Valopallo lamp is available in a new colour: graphite grey.

The popular Reitti ceiling lamps designed by Anu Penttinen are now available in two new colours: graphite grey and lingonberry red.

The Aarikka brand will be brightened in the summer: The revamp will create even stronger foundations for international expansion

Aarikka, a Finnish family business founded in 1954, is taking bold steps to brighten its brand in line with its strategy. Aarikka Oy has planned its updated brand in collaboration with customer insight company Kopla Helsinki Oy. The revamp will encompass the key messages, visual identity, advertising, packaging and online store. Aarikka’s iconic logo will remain unchanged.

In the future, Aarikka Oy aims to draw even more focus to the core of its brand: Finnishness, nature, the use of wood and Scandinavian design. Finnish nature and forests form the basis for the activities, visual identity, design and key messages.

Drops of Joy

“In our communications, we aim to highlight nature, ecology and sustainability, which are instrumental to our brand. We select only the best-quality wood to use as a raw material. We highlight the materials and types of wood that the products are made from and we communicate the characteristics and benefits of the materials. In addition, we aim to communicate the meaning of Aarikka quality and how our products embody this quality. Colour does not run from the wooden elements in our products, the form is genuinely round and there are no traces of turning or gluing left behind. The elements of our wooden jewellery are coloured by hand in Vallila, Helsinki, and they are assembled by hand by our home-based employees. Our home products are assembled at social employment workshops in Finland. This is our way of promoting employment and social participation among people suffering from social exclusion,” says Anu Vauhkonen, the company’s CEO.

The Aarikka brand has always been connected with roundness and joy. The new brand promise and position – Drops of Joy – communicates the way Aarikka adds a sprinkling of happiness to everyday life as well as to special occasions. The company’s products comprise jewellery and home products. They are sized to fit into a shoebox – or at least a boot box – just as Kaija Aarikka, the company’s founder, envisaged.

The brand revamp is already visible

Aarikka’s revamped brand mindset is already making its presence felt. The company’s flagship store on the Northern Esplanade in Helsinki has been updated in collaboration with designer Noora Sallasmaa. Stools made from blocks of birch wood have been placed outside the store to communicate the roots of the Aarikka brand: wood as a material and nature. The window displays are now in keeping with the brand’s new visual identity. Illuminated wooden surfaces highlight Aarikka’s products and brand in a better and more attractive way. The store’s interior design and window settings present the brand’s fresh new visual identity and Scandinavian design in a more inviting manner. The store also communicates the values of Finnish handicraft.

Photographs with strong elements of harmony, joy and clear lines were instrumental in creating Aarikka’s new visual identity. Aarikka works with Katri Kapanen and Anna Pirkola on photography.

Digital services to be updated for an international audience

The revamped Aarikka online service will be opened in June. Aarikka has worked with Kopla Helsinki Oy and Motley Agency Oy to update its online service. The online store has been designed to cater for the needs of international markets without forgetting Finnish customers. The online store was built on the Shopify platform, which can be handed over for partners in Asia, for example, to administer content in different languages. Key elements of the project included simplifying processes and ensuring compatibility with our ERP system.

Product packaging will be revamped next – the products will be packaged so as to highlight the same message and visual identity of the brand. A further aim of the updated packaging is to improve the visibility of products in stores, where products need to be able to sell themselves from the shelves. Store visibility will also be boosted in other ways. Aarikka aims to continue bringing joy, colour and nature into its customers’ lives in a responsible way.
